Since 1977, Sherlock's Baker Street Pubs have been rocking the Lonestar State with loud live bands and free-flowing liquor. True to form and character, five years ago The Battle of the Bands was born, unleashing exceptional live music in all seven locations and offering up to $15,000 in cash and prizes. The Battle of the Bands has grown so much that in its fifth year, 1,000 people are expected to pack each location as the contest continues to generate great music and even loftier revenues for the bars. Mount Gay Melon Rum and Remy Red are among the sponsors, and according to Tilman Walker, director of entertainment for Hospitality USA, Sherlock's parent company, "The live music isn't an additive. It is always part of the plan." The bands who wish to compete are required to send in a demo tape or video which is then judged on sound as well as visual performance. "Some of the bands come out of the woodwork," Walker says. "As long as they are good entertainers and have good material, they are on the schedule afterward." The final round will be held in late September at the Austin, Texas, location.
